Top 10 Movie Rentals for June ‘09

June 3, 2009
Company: iTunes

He’s Just Not That Into You - Ken Kwapis
Remember that really cute guy who said he’d call…and didn’t? Maybe “He’s Just Not That into You.” An all-star cast looks for love and finds laughs in this savvy, sexy, right-now rom-com. Based on the runaway (like some guys you know) bestseller by Sex and the City series writers Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo, Hes Just Not That into You sparkles with zingy aha moments any survivor of the dating wars will recognize. See it with someone you’d like to love.

Gran Torino - Clint Eastwood
Academy Award-winner Clint Eastwood (”Million Dollar Baby,” “Mystic River”) directs and stars as disgruntled Korean War veteran Walt, who sets out to reform his neighbor, a young Hmong teenager, who tried to steal Kowalski’s prized possession: his 1972 Gran Torino. The two learn to grow beyond their own prejudices and struggles by fighting together to change the harsh realities of racial gang violence in their neighborhood.

Fanboys - Kyle Newman
It’s 1998 and Star Wars fanboys across the globe eagerly await the release of Episode I. But for Eric, Linus, Hutch and Windows the term “fanboy” is more than just a title, it’s a badge of honor. Spurred by impatience and an undying loyalty to their cause, these former high school friends reunite to undertake the road trip of their fan-tasies. Traveling West across the country to visit their Mecca - George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch - the plan is to break in, steal the film and stake their claim as the first fanboys in history to watch it. But to secure their place in the fanboy hall of fame, they’ll have to contend with bizarre bikers, a crazy pimp, a deranged group of trekkies and the quiet intensity of William Shatner.

Inkheart - Lain Softley
Ten-year-old Meggie’s father, Mo “Silvertongue” (played by Brendan Fraser — the “Mummy” franchise, “Journey to the Center of the Earth”), has a wonderful talent: When he reads aloud, the characters literally come to life, an ability he discovered when several terrible creatures sprang to life while he read from the story Inkheart. Silvertongue not only read several wicked characters out of the book, but he also read her mother in! He has been struggling to bring her mother back — and now the evil Capricorn (Golden Globe-nominee Andy Serkis - “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, “King Kong”) plans to find a way to steal this amazing power for his own dark plans. Also starring, Paul Bettany (”A Beautiful Mind,” “Firewall”), Academy Award and Golden Globe-winner Jim Broadbent (”Iris,” TV’s “Longford”), Eliza Bennett (”Nanny McPhee,” “The Prince and Me”) and Academy Award, Golden Globe and Emmy-winner Helen Mirren (”The Queen,” TV’s “Elizabeth I”).

Valkyrie - Bryan Singer
At the height of WWII, a group of German officers hatched a plot to assassinate Hitler and seize control of the military command in order to end the war. The operation was code-named “Valkyrie”, for the emergency plan that was meant to be used in case of a revolt against the Nazi government. This plan had been modified by the conspirators to ensure their success, but for various reasons the plot failed when finally carried out on 20 July 1944. The conspirators of the inner circle were shot after a kangaroo trial or sentenced to death soon after. Starring Tom Cruise as the Colonel who was the main force behind the conspiracy, the distinguished cast also includes Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Terence Stamp and Eddie Izzard. Directed by Bryan Singer.

Taken - Pierre Morel
When his estranged daughter is kidnapped in Paris, a former spy (Liam Neeson) sets out to find her at any cost. Relying on his special skills, he tracks down the ruthless gang that abducted her and launches a one-man war to bring them to justice and rescue his daughter.
The Squid and the Whale - Noah Baumbach
Based on the true childhood experiences of director Noah Baumbach, The Squid and the Whale tells the story of a patriarch (Jeff Daniels, Dumb & Dumber, Speed) of an eccentric Brooklyn family who once had been a great novelist, but has settled into a teaching job. When his wife (Laura Linney, Exorcism of Emily Rose, Kinsey) discovers a writing talent of her own, jealousy divides the family, leaving two teenage sons to forge new relationships with their parents. Linney’s character begins dating her younger son’s tennis coach (William Baldwin, Backdraft, Flatliners). Meanwhile, Daniels’ character has an affair with the student (Anna Paquin, X-Men, Almost Famous) his older son is pursuing.

New In Town - Jonas Elmer
Lucy Hill (Renée Zellweger) is an ambitious, up and coming executive living in Miami. She loves her shoes, she loves her cars and she loves climbing the corporate ladder. When she is offered a temporary assignment - in the middle of nowhere - to restructure a manufacturing plant, she accepts the opportunity, knowing a big promotion is close at hand. What begins as a straight forward job assignment becomes a life changing experience as Lucy discovers greater meaning in her life and more unexpectedly, the man of her dreams (Harry Connick, Jr.).

Role Models (Unrated) - David Wain
Prepare yourself for the most irreverent and funny comedy that brings new meaning to juvenile delinquency! As the world’s least-likely mentors, Danny (Paul Rudd) & Wheeler (Seann William Scott) must put aside their selfish, sarcastic and party-driven ways in order to give two odd, foul-mouthed kids invaluable wisdom about life, love and heavy metal. With a supporting cast of comic all-stars including Elizabeth Banks, Jane Lynch, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Bobb’e J. Thompson, Role Models is “a surprisingly clever comedy” (Claudia Puig, USA Today).

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - David Fincher
“I was born under unusual circumstances.” And so begins “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” adapted from the 1920s story by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a man who is born in his eighties and ages backwards: a man, like any of us, who is unable to stop time. We follow his story, set in New Orleans, from the end of World War I in 1918 into the 21st century, following his journey that is as unusual as any man’s life can be. Directed by David Fincher and starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett with Taraji P. Henson, Tilda Swinton, Jason Flemyng, Elias Koteas and Julia Ormond, “Benjamin Button,” is a grand tale of a not-so-ordinary man and the people and places he discovers along the way, the loves he finds, the joys of life and the sadness of death, and what lasts beyond time.
